West China the Semen Examination Quality Control Center, established in 2024, is built upon a leading clinical and laboratory platform for reproductive andrology in China—the Department of Reproductive Andrology & Sichuan Human Sperm Bank at West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University. It stands as one of the few specialized institutions globally dedicated to comprehensive quality control across the entire semen testing process. With a core mission to advance the standardization of semen analysis, enhance the reliability and international comparability of test results, the center systematically conducts multifaceted initiatives, including External Quality Assessment (EQA), professional training, and the development of reference systems.

Core Services

1.EQA Program

We operate China’s largest EQA program for semen analysis:

· 337 participating laboratories (2025 cycle)

· Nationwide coverage across 30 provinces 

· 14 analytes, including sperm concentration, motility, vitality, and morphology

This program supports laboratory accreditation, promotes result harmonization, and lays the foundation for multicenter clinical research and international data sharing.

2. Reference Laboratory Network Development
The Center is spearheading the establishment of China’s first reference laboratory network for semen analysis. To date, 51 institutions (including our own) have been designated as founding members. This network aims to achieve metrological traceability in semen testing and align national practices with international standards.

3. Standardized Training Programs

We deliver comprehensive, hands-on training aligned with global best practices, including:

· WHO-standard operating procedures for semen analysis (per the WHO Laboratory Manual for the Examination and Processing of Human Semen, 6th Edition)

· Clinical pathways for the diagnosis and management of male infertilitySince 2022, we have trained over 260 professionals from 29 provinces across China. Starting in 2025, we will launch live-streamed practical demonstrations and bilingual (English/Chinese) course modules to better serve international learners.
